Creating a File to Import
When using a file to import grades, ANGEL will request the delimited option and the appropriate columns containing the User ID and assignment grades to be imported. Keep this in mind when constructing a file to import.
When creating an Excel file to import:
- Open Excel.
- In column A, enter the MSU email address (NetID @msu.edu) for each student. This will be the User ID column. Do not use a header row. The first student's User ID should appear in cell A1.
- Enter the students' grades in the other columns. Again you should not use a header row, but need to remember the column for each assignment’s grades. The following shows an Excel workbook with two student User IDs and grades for three assignments.

- Click on Save As, and in the dialog box that appears enter a file name, and save the file as a comma-delimited file (csv) or a tab-delimited file (.tsv ). DO NOT save as an Excel file).
- Return to ANGEL to upload the file (see above).
When creating a Word file to import:
- Open Word.
- Enter the MSU email address (NetID @msu.edu) for the students and the grade(s) for each student, with the email address and assignment grades separated by commas. You will need to remember the order of the assignments. At the end of each student’s data, hit Enter. Below is an example for two students and three assignments.
sparty@msu.edu,90,100,85
mascot@msu.edu,85,95,75 - Click on Save As, and in the dialog box that appears enter a file name and save the file as a .txt file. DO NOT save it as a Word file.
- Return to ANGEL to import the file.
Note: Blank scores need to have a comma to delimit them. Text editors such as Notepad or WordPad could be used in place of Word.
